Lewmar traveller car repair

Posted 15/04/2015 by Tom Venator/Katface:
As you can see on the “broken sheaves” picture he flanges on the sheaves for the traveller line on the Lewmar traveller car failed. A call to the Lewmar representative in the USA found that Lewmar no longer supports this traveller design with spares or documentation. I was invited to buy and install a new traveller system. Through trial and error, good advice, …

Rudder Problems

Posted  20/02/2015 by Lars Ström:
It is suggested that you inspect the upper end of the rudder stock casing closely, as there could also be another reason for the leakage – the lower bearing housing has come loose from the surrounding GRP. In this case the water enters between the steel housing and the GRP laminate around it, and there is a slot visible.
In the photo the …

Refrigeration

Posted 23/02/2015:
I assume that you also have the 220v compressor, otherwise why would you keep the original plates.
Unless you are planning to put in a 24v compressor to drive the old plates, I did not think that was an option.
To be honest, I have only used the 220v compressor once since I had the 2 24v systems installed, but its a reassuring backup.
My old system …

New engine for Swan 46

Posted 15/04/2014: Foreign Affair New Engine
The engine was 18 years old with 4000 hours of use.
It was still running well but we would occasionally have a problem, and each time the problems appeared to get more serious and deeper into the engine.
The last problem was a year ago at the Middle Sea Race when we had to replace the fresh water pump, which required removing …

New Teak Decks

Trumpeter is lying at her berth in Sotogrande and having new teak deck laid on. We have reached the interesting stage – the old teak removed, deck sanded down and all fittings removed. The man who is doing it, single handed, is a veritable artist. He has sawn the teak tree trunk and cut and shaped all the bits of the jigsaw. The thickness is …

Teak Deck Caulking

One of our members experienced the following: For the seam caulking we used Mapei Silwood Decking. As the boat is berthed near a boatyard, we thought we would protect the finished deck by applying a sealant – we were recommended a product known as Teak Wonder. Everything seemed alright for the first two to three months, but we then noticed that the rubber caulking seemed …

Mains power hot water

12/02/2014 Lars: Referring to the heater voltage, the AC on board system can be set up for either 220 or 110 V, and the outlet voltage on board tells which one it is. The heater should use the same voltage as the outlets. Pls check. If there are shore inlets for both 220 and 110 V there is a transformer for one of them so …

Sails

Posted 10/02/2014:Foreign Affair: I would recommend Spectra Sails, they are long lasting and we have been successful with them but they are heavy.

Problem with the custom stainless steel pipe

Posted 12/02/2014:
Possible cause electrolysis.
Lars – Yes, my answer mentions electrolysis as a possible reason, although I  referred to this as “some galvanically very active substances”.
Electrolysis is a rather broad term, and can be divided into electrolytic and galvanic corrosion.
The electrolytic variant is caused by a leak in the electrical on board system, appears unlikely here because it would require cabling in the area, and occur …

Maintenance log

Posted 08/10/2013: I am starting to put together a maintenance log to list all the equipment on the boat, part numbers, and service dates, and so forth.  Is there anybody who has already developed any similar logs and would like to share? Best regards, Tom Venator

Swan 46 – Fresh water leak on Katface

Posted 08/10/2013: Some years ago I had a lot of trouble with my combination of water pressure system and manual pumps. I fitted a tap on the water pipe from the tanks to the manual pumps so that when not in use I could turn that system off. Later I fitted individual taps to each pump so that I could selectively use them. Regards, Paul …

Swier – AWL Grip colours

Dear Sven, you refer to the inside of the hull, and this was originally painted with brown topcoat. Assuming that the white Awlgrip used here inside was the same as on the outside, the Awlgrip recipe corresponding to the original topside gelcoat is a mixture of equal parts Off White and Snow White. The blue could be Marlin, Empress, or Lauderdale Blue. Suggest you get …

Swan 46 CentreBoard version

There are 11 Swan 46’s with CB keel, draught 1.7/ 2.9 m, same ballast weight, rudder area is 9% smaller.
1. The long and low CB lead keel is much stronger in case of grounding. The board is of GRP, and hinged so it folds up if touching the ground. The boat sails quite well also without the board. There a some details not found on …

Bandit – Double light switches

I have a question: Do you know where I can find double light switches?  I have ordered new ones from Nautor but they are too large to fit in many places where the double switch is installed on the 46. Thanks, Fred Davies

Placement of Foresail tracks

– Twilight: We never used the outside track before redoing the decks and we never regretted it after we took of. The barber sheet is guided through a bloc which is fixed on the alu toe rail.
– Foreign Affair: Chose to keep both, because I wanted to keep the boat as original as possible.
– Bandit: I’ve managed to upgrade Bandit over the years but often needed …

Twilight – Galvanizing of Steel Frame holding Keel

A few years ago, the steel frame inside Twilight, which holds the keel and on which the mast is stepped, started to rust. Although we painted the frame with epoxy, the rust came back from the bottom side as the bottom of the frame is not accessible.
In order to handle the frame, we contacted Nautor to inform if the steel frame could be taken out …
